Rare ASG-graded Chinese Stamps Sell for Nearly $60,000 in Champion Macau Auction

A group of ASG-certified stamps sold for tens of thousands of dollars in a Macau auction in November 2022.

A group of several dozen vintage Chinese stamps certified by Authenticated Stamp Guaranty® (ASG®) and pedigreed to the H.F. Bowker Collection realized $57,336 as part of the 2022 Champion Macau Autumn Auction, held in Macau, China, on November 27, 2022. The stamps are all pedigreed to the H.F. Bowker Collection.

The top-selling single-piece lot certified by ASG in the auction was a Block of Four China (1885-1888) Qing Dynasty - Small Dragon 1 Candareens graded ASG VF/XF 85 Mint OG (lot 5) which realized $4,320. This is one of the highest-quality blocks of these stamps, which are emblematic of early Chinese postage history.

Other ASG-certified highlights from the H.F. Bowker Collection in this auction included:

  • a group of eight China Qing Dynasty Specimens, including a ½ Cent, 1 Cent, 2 Cents, 4 Cents, 5 Cents, 10 Cents, 20 Cents and 30 Cents, each graded ASG VF 80 Mint OP (lot 27), that realized $14,400
  • a group of three China Undated Second Beijing Print Memorial Archway for Use in Xinjiang Specimens, including a $5, $10 and $20, each graded ASG VF 80 Mint POG or ASG VF/XF 85 Mint POG (lot 30), that realized $9,600
  • a China Undated 5 Cents graded ASG VF 80 Mint POG; a 10 Cents graded ASG VF 80 Mint POG; and a 50 Cents graded ASG F/VF 75 Mint POG (lot 26), that realized $3,840
  • a China 1899 Weihai Port Courier Post Issue Block of 25 2 Cents graded ASG F/VF 75 Mint OG (lot 19), that realized $3,120
  • a group of four China 1921 Chinese Postal Service 25th Anniversary Specimens, including a 1 Cent, 3 Cents, 6 Cents and 10 Cents, each graded ASG VF 80 Mint POG or ASG VF/XF 85 Mint POG (lot 29), that realized $1,800
  • a group of 11 China Undated First Beijing Print Junk for Use in Xinjiang Specimens, including a 1/2 Cent, 1 Cent, 1.5 Cents, 2 Cents, 3 Cents, 4 Cents, 5 Cents, 6 Cents, 7 Cents, 8 Cents and 10 Cents, each graded ASG F/VF 75 Mint POG to ASG VF/XF 85 Mint POG (lot 28), that realized $1,560

Prices realized include a buyer’s premium.
